Open Forum:
Sue Noble of Provident Bank volunteered to Chair a Flea Market Fundraiser in the fall at the K-Mart Plaza, Route 35. She has spoken to Management and they are open to the idea. It was suggested that she form a volunteer committee and discuss requirements, etc. with Jo-Ann Dinan prior to the next meeting.
Mayor Scott Aagre suggested appointing a “Business Advisory Board” consisting of two members from the Business community and members from the Township to review all business fees.
Vice President Tom Kelly disagreed and was not in favor of appointing yet another board, he reminded the Elected Officials in attendance that the current fees charged are out of control. The fees Hazlet businesses must remit are not only the highest in the County, they pay the most fees. He reminded everyone of the illegal fees charged for a period of over ten years by the Fire Department and the lawsuit filed. He suggests that the Township Committee sit down and review the fees themselves in an effort to reduce and pro rate fees.
A heated discussion ensued with regard to the surplus gained by eliminating the Sewer Authority. The surplus amounts to over $400,000 which is being placed into the general budget. Thereby, eliminating a reduced sewer fee to both residential customers and businesses. Once again the suggestion to change the billing method for businesses to meet the rates charged to residential customers was requested.
The Mayor announced there has been no discussion of increasing any of the current fees charged to businesses by the Township Committee.
He further advised that if the Fire Districts had intent on raising fees he would discuss this with the Business Community.

Open Forum:
Two members of the Township Committee were in attendance, James DeNardo and Joseph Marques. Also in attendance was former Mayor Kevin Lavan. They were asked to up-date the membership on the status of the reduction in sewer costs since the closing of the Sewer Authority and how rates will affect businesses. We were advised that there was a savings of over $434,000.00, however, there are no plans at this time to reduce rates for commercial or residential entities by the majority of the Township committee, rather they have decided to use these funds in the general budget.
We were also advised that there has been no discussion on the pro-rating of fees required by all businesses.
The minority party is in agreement to look favorably upon a reduction in rates for both commercial and residential entities for sewer and also open to the prorating of fees, however, they have advised they are powerless to do anything to move these matters forward.
It was determined that a group of business owners would attend a Township Committee meeting to discuss these matters. Cliff Moore a Business Owner and Hazlet Resident will be the spokesperson.
Post Card mailing: Not everyone received their e-mail notification of meeting. Association to begin mailing post cards with quarterly or semi-annual meeting dates. The Monitor has been sending the e-mails from their account in an effort to save the association the monthly fees, however, e-mails will now arrive directly from a HBOA web address rather than from the Monitor.
It has also been suggested that HBOA obtain their own Post Office Box. Currently we are using former President John Conti’s PO Box.
